Reasons I Love Secondhand Shopping (and you should too)

Secondhand shopping has definitely gained a lot of popularity in the last year with many people following Oxfams no new clothing in September campaign and with people being more educated about the climate and seeing the true damage that fast fashion inflicts on the planet. While this is all fantastic, there are still many people who just turn up there noses and continue to shop from fast fashion brands ignoring everything else that is going on around them.

One of the main reasons I blog is to help open peoples eyes so that they can see how much better secondhand shopping is and how you can get the benefits of helping the planet and other people by not going to high street stores. So today I wanted to give a whole rant about why I love secondhand clothing!

MONEY MONEY MONEY – When I started buying my own clothes from my weekly pocket money, I couldn’t afford places like Topshop and living somewhere that only had secondhand shops in the 10 mile radius meant that I had to shop there. But that was handy because I saved so much money. For the price of one new item I could get about 4 items secondhand! I am aware that some places are slowly getting more and more expensive but on the whole it is cheaper. Designer clothing secondhand is still way out of my price range quite frankly.

Even though I now have a full time job and have the money to spend on new clothes, I’d rather not. I’d rather spend that money on something else more exciting than some new clothes such as some secondhand clothes.

I don’t know if its just me that thinks this but it’s a much more exciting experience walking into a charity or vintage shop compared to a high street store. Every fast fashion brand basically stocks the same things, just ever so slightly different and you can really go more than once a month because they still have all the same stock. However its much more fun rummaging through the rails of somewhere secondhand because no 2 shops stock the same stuff and you never know what hidden gems you’ll find in the racks.

The whole experience is just a lot more fun!

I am honestly glad that I never really had the option and money to shop for new clothes because it’s like I’ve seen a whole different side of fashion. Instead of following the trends it kinda inspired me to do my own thing and have a unique fashion sense instead of dressing like everyone else. Now I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with following the trends but it’s not my cup of tea.

There’s nothing fulfilling about buying something new in my opinion. But if you get anything secondhand then it has history. It’s kinda exciting getting something secondhand and imaging the life it had before and the previous owner, its very interesting.

For example, I have a lot of clothing handed down from my parents such as my dads demin jacket. He told me stories of how he’d carry beers in the inside pockets when he was younger. Now I have my own stories with the jacket that I can share with him. Or I have some shirts of his that I can see in photos that include me when I was a baby.

That may just be me being crazy but I really love how secondhand pieces all have stories!

I could go on and on and on but I don’t wanna bore y’all but i do hope that I can inspire you to check out more secondhand stuff. You wouldn’t find any funky trousers like these in somewhere like primark. These are amazing quality and unique!

Same with the shirt and that’s because I upcycled it and added a cute lil frill to the bottom of it which I personally haven’t seen on shirts before.

I’d love to know if and why you love secondhand shopping? And what your best secondhand purchase is??
