Is it cheesy to say that The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying has revolutionised my life?
Probably. But it’s true.
I’ve always wanted to be one of those people with an immaculate room and I could wake up and feel peaceful in my surroundings but alas that was not my reality. After work I’d throw all my stuff on the floor because I didn’t see the point in putting it away when I was just gonna need it the next day. This includes the contents of my handbag, my clothes, books the whole lot really and it really stressed me out. While it has been a fabulous start to the year I did just feel a bit stressed when I was at home which is when I decided it was time to follow the advice of a professional.
The way Marie Kondo talks about tidying is amazing, she talks as if it is a form of art and I have learnt that it kinda is!
My biggest area of stress was my wardrobe area which consists of 2 clothing rails, a small chest of drawers and one of those tower cube storage things and these were scattered in different corners of my room. I would tidy it up every few months but within a week I gave up and ended up just throwing the clothes anywhere there was space, often putting multiple things on 1 hanger. I have photo evidence to show it’s a mess.
To some this may be nothing but to the perfectionist pisces side of me, I was stressed. If you didn’t want to read her book then you could watch her series on Netflix where she touches on a few things that are in the book. There is nothing more satisfying though than watching someone tidy their house…. or is that just me…..
Following her guidelines, the first step is to take all of your clothes and then empty them into a big pile in the middle of you floor. Then you can see the sheer amount of clothing you have which should make you realise that you need to discard a lot of them, that’s the idea of the activity.
Before you start reorganising again you need to go through them and she has a simple method for deciding which ones you should keep and which ones should go. Only keep items that spark joy. When you hold the item in you hand, it should make you feel happy. If it doesn’t then it should go. It may sound kinda lame but once you start you will see how effective a method it is. I am the sort of person who keeps clothes with the intention of wearing it someday but then never do so all of those clothes swiftly went in the discard pile.
Here is a pile of clothing I’m keeping in contrast to the pile that I was going to donate to charity shops:
I found pieces that I completely forgot about because my style tends to change quite a lot and pieces that I have only worn about once and never would again. I also had 2 denim jackets which did make me question whether one person needs 2 so I decided that I didn’t. I also had 5 pairs of dungarees… I know I need help…. I may have kept 4 of them because they do all spark joy.
On my sort of journey to leading a more minimalist life, I’ve read loads of articles saying that you should have like 33 items in you wardrobe etc etc and I am choosing not to follow any of that because it’s rubbish. If clothes spark joy with you, then own hundreds of pieces. I love fashion which is why I have a lot of clothes and even though I gotten rid of a few bags full here, I still have a lot but they are pieces that I love and treasure until my style changes again and off to the charity shop I go.
Once you’ve discarded what needed to be discarded, it’s time to sort out your storage. In her books she discusses the importance of keeping the same categories of things in the same place which is why I decided to move all my various storage units into one place which does make it easier to see what I have so I can then decide what to wear in the morning.
Then it’s onto folding which is a whole art form. It’s hard to describe it but you’ll just have to watch the series to see how to do it, but the idea is by folding them into rectangles they can then be stored vertically. The benefits of storing things vertically means that you can see all of your clothes and it also makes it so much easier to remove things and put them back. Look how neat these boxes now look! It also saves a lot of space.
The only place where this may not work as well is open storage things like one of those cube towers that I have. What I did was I bought some boxes from IKEA to put in which means I can store things vertically. This doesn’t work in the top section but I think this system still works as there’s only a few pieces in there.
The big issue for me was that at the end of the day I’d throw my clothes on the floor and say I’d sort it in the morning which honestly never happened. At the end of the day, I make it a chore to fold and put away all my clothes, which actually takes no time at all so I don’t know why I ever complained. Then I can wake up to a fresh and tidy room.
Also did you know that there’s a correct way to store socks??? Well it’s a similar principle in that you fold them into a rectangle/square shape so that you can see them all at once. My sock draw used to explode every time I opened it but now it’s organised into different types of socks and I can open and close it with ease. I am well aware that me talking about folding my socks and clothes may sound lame and boring but honestly it’s game changing.
My whole room just looks SO much better, and I love all the clothes that I have and even better, it means there’s space to buy some more if I really wanted. Just look how neat and tidy this looks. I did this over a week ago and I can safely say that I have kept up with the folding my clothes every evening and I am determined to keep this up for as long as possible.
